When people had asked him where he was going, he told them he was going to see his girlfriend in Boston, Massachusetts or maybe his brother in Tennessee. Robert Clifton Newell Sr. was active in the church and when he did not show for Thursday night church dinner at Capitol Hill United Methodist Church on December 26, 1974, then did not show for the church service, the United Methodist Church Minister requested police check on Robert Clifton Newell Sr.. No signs of foul play were found by police.
Robert Clifton Newell Sr. was a regular at the American Legion where he would have some drinks and boast about how he had lots of money, but for a few years prior to his disappearance he was homeless and frequently stayed at Salvation Army Shelters. Robert’s family believes that he may have left the DC area and died in the Virginia suburbs south of Washington, DC.
Robert Clifton Newell Sr. was 65 years old at the time of his disappearance. Robert Clifton Newell Sr. is 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs approximately 190 to 200 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and poor eyesight. Robert Clifton Newell Sr. has a large dimple on his chin and walks with a limp.
