Shirley Gibbs Russell, a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, went missing from her married officers quarters on Quantico Marine Base on March 4, 1989. At the time of her disappearance, Shirley Gibbs Russell and her husband, Robert Peter Russell, had been married about 18 months and were in the middle of finalizing a divorce. The two separated a few weeks before she went missing and the day before Shirley went missing, she had picked up the final version of her marital settlement agreement.
Both Shirley and Robert were officers in the Marine Corps, but while Shirley was seen as a good candidate for the rank of Major, her husband was dishonorably discharged shortly before Shirley went missing. Her husband Robert had moved off the base and Shirley had moved into bachelor quarters. Both Shirley and Robert were cleaning out their married officer quarters on the day she went missing. Her husband, Robert Russell had stated that he last saw Shirley when she left the quarters on foot to go to a store five miles away to buy a can of paint. Shirley Gibbs has not been seen or heard from again. Her passport and drivers license are also missing and she has not used her credit cards or banks accounts since. Foul play is suspected in the disappearance of Shirley Gibbs.
Robert Russell was ultimately charged with the murder of Shirley Russell Gibbs. Although no body was recovered, no blood was found at the supposed crime scene and the weapon they accused Robert of using to commit the crime was never found, a witness that did say that she had an affair with Robert in the months leading up to the disappearance of Shirley did testify that Robert had once told her that he wanted to murder his wife.
Shirley Gibbs Russell’s disappearance was later made into a made for television movie called “Perfect Crime”. According to this website, “Perfect Crime” is a movie based on the murder of Shirley Gibbs Russell by her husband, Marine Corps officer Robert P. Russell. “Perfect Crime” aka “A Perfect Crime” debuted on the USA Network in 1997. The names and locations were changed for the film. It stars Jasmine Guy, Mitzi Kapture and Nick Searcy. The docudrama is directed by Robert Michael lewis.
