justin_burgwinkle_01Justin Burgwinkel is a U.S. Army Soldier who went Absent Without Leave (AWOL) out of Fort Lewis, Washington and was last seen at his girlfriend’s apartment in Monterey, California in the summer of 1993.  Justin Burgwinkel as assigned to Ford Ord near Monterey, California for his first three years in the Army.  It was while assigned to fort Ord that he met his girlfriend, Iolanda Antunes. His girlfriend said that after several months of dating, he would abruptly end their dates early with no explanation and had started behaving oddly.

Justin Burgwinkel’s next assignment would take him to Fort Lewis, Washington where after a few months he took two weeks of leave and returned to his girlfriend in Monterey.  His girlfriend said that he returned to Monterey with a briefcase and would not let her know what was inside.  While Justin Burgwinkel was at her home, he received a phone call telling him simply “the missions off”.  After this phone call, he became visibly upset.  Nearing the end of his two weeks of leave, Justin Burgwinkel returned to the Fort Lewis area and purchased two handguns and ammunition.  On June 4, 1993 he failed to report for duty and on June 7, 1993 he was reported as AWOL. What his unit did not know was that he went back to Monterey to his girlfriend’s home.  His girlfriend said that when asked about his behavior, Justin Burgwinkel referred her to the 1992 movie “White Sands” which is a movie about the world of international arms smuggling.  While living with his girlfriend and being listed as AWOL by his unit at Fort Lewis, Washington, Justin Burgwinkel made unexplained trips to Fort Ord.

One day, Justin Burgwinkel left his girlfriend’s home and never returned.  About three months later his vehicle was located abandoned at a beachfront motel near Fort Ord.  When police searched the vehicle, his handguns were not present, but his briefcase was found in the trunk and it contained his wallet and military issue identification tags (Dog Tags).  Justin Burgwinkel’s family does not know if he was killed as part of a smuggling operation or if he disappeared on his own.

Justin Burgwinkel was 21 years old when he went missing in 1993.  Justin Burgwinkel is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed approximately 175 pounds around the time he went missing.  Justin Burgwinkel has brown hair and brown eyes.
