Jonathan Aujay

jonathan_aujay_01Jonathan Aujay is a U.S. Army Veteran who went missing after going for a hike in the Devil’s Punchbowl area of the Angeles National Forest in California on June 11, 1998.  Jonathan Aujay was a U.S. Army Paratrooper when he served in the Army.  He would later pursue a career in civilian law enforcement and was a deputy at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years.  Jonathan Aujay is a long distance runner and had competed in ultra marathons and was currently in training for a 100 mile run.  Jonathan was also an experienced hiker and skilled outdoorsman.  Friends know Jonathan as someone who studied how to live off the land and he knew which bugs and plants he could eat to survive in the wilderness if needed, especially in the environment where he last hiked.

Before leaving for his hike, Jonathan Aujay told his wife that he was heading to Mount Baden-Powell, a popular destination for hikers in the Angeles National Forest.  Jonathan Aujay told his wife that he would be home by dark and she said she remembered him actually saying it twice, so when we did not come home on the night of June 11, 1998, she grew very concerned.

On the day that Jonathan Aujay went missing, he called his supervisor to tell him that he did not want to take a new position within the department as a firearms instructor that he was offered and instead wanted to stay as a K-9 Deputy.  Jonathan Aujay was a K-9 deputy for three years and his dog, Bosco, lived with him at home.  Shortly after Jonathan Aujay went missing, the Sheriff Department took Bosco from his home.  Bosco, a German Shepard would die of a heart attack about two weeks after Jonathan Aujay went missing.

A six day long extensive search was conducted to find Jonathan Aujay which included search and rescue team volunteers, Marines, airmen, sailors and off-duty sheriff’s deputies who used helicopters, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, tracking dogs, and infrared and thermal imaging equipment, but no trace was found of him.

Jonathan Aujay was 38 years old when he disappeared in 1998.  Jonathan Aujay is 6 feet tall and weighed approximately 165 pounds at the time he went missing.  Jonathan Aujay has brown hair and brown eyes. Jonathan Aujay has a tattoo of a U.S. Army Eagle on on his upper left arm and a tattoo on his upper right arm with the text “SEB” in a triangle.  When Jonathan Aujay was last seen, he was wearing olive green shorts with pockets, a light colored shirt, hiking boots, black crew socks and a blue and white or green and white baseball cap.  Jonathan Aujay was wearing a Casio brand running watch, black oval shaped sunglasses and he was carrying a forest green in color Jansport brand day pack.
