Richard Harvell is a 67 year old Vietnam Veteran who was reported missing at 10:45 p.m. on October 15, 2015 after being swept away by a flash flood. Richard Harvell and a friend were camping in a flash flood area of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, California when thunderstorms caused mud and water to run down the mountain side into the area they occupied. Richard Harvell tried to get into his truck to prevent the truck from being washed away, but a 3 foot wide rock slid down the mountain and hit his leg. Shortly after being struck, a wall of mud followed and washed him away. Richard Harvell was last seen being swept away in a river of mud and sand in the area of 150th Street West and Highgate Avenue. Richard Harvell’s truck was located only a short distance from where he was last seen.
Wet and muddy conditions have hampered search efforts and in areas where the water has dried, tons of hardened mud still needs to be removed. The search has included air support from the Air support from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and members of the KCSO desert search-and-rescue team searched the area but were unable to find him.
