Jake Furrer is an Army National Guard Veteran who went missing after texting his mother at 6:34 a.m. May 1, 2016 for her birthday likely from the El Centro, California area. In the late afternoon of April 30, 2016, Jake was last seen by his mother, Stacy Bodus, at a Denny’s restaurant in Calexico, California. Security camera footage shows that Jake waited until his mother left the restaurant before he exited the restaurant. His mother noticed that Jake was carrying an olive green knapsack with possibly only a pipe, tobacco and a canteen of water inside.
Jake Furrer served as a combat engineer with a National Guard unit out of El Centro, California. In September, 2015, a close friend of Jake passed away and depression and anxiety set in. Jake worked at The Gun Shop in El Centro, California, Border Tactical in El Centro, California and he was a truck driver at a mine. By December 2015, Jake had quit all his jobs. According to Jake Furrer’s mother, Jake has given away most of his possessions.
There is a possibility that Jake has crossed the border into Mexico. Jake’s cell phone is not in service, so he would have to have been near a wi-fi access point in order to send the text message on May 1, 2016 to his mother. It is likely that if he did go into Mexicali, Mexico, it was after he sent the last known text message at 6:34 a.m. on May 1. There is no indication that messages sent to his facebook account have been viewed by him and text messages sent to his iPhone are not shown as being “delivered” or “read” which leads some to believe that his phone may be turned off.
Jake Furrer is 28 years old as of the date he went missing in May 2016. Jake Furrer is described as a white male standing 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing approximately 260 pounds. His mother describes him as being “built like a tank”. Jake has dark brown eyes and shaves his head, but he does have brown hair and he may have a beard by now. Jake is known to smoke a pipe and he carries an olive green knapsack. Jake Furrer has a tattoo on one of his biceps of a Chinese symbol for a dragon which is approximately 2 inches in diameter and he has a scar on his knee from arthroscopic surgery when he was 3 years old. Jake may be wearing ankle high boots with a waffle patter tread called “waffle stompers” that are size 10 and too small for his feet. Wearing these boots causes Jake to walk with a limp. He does have other size boots that are size 12 or 13, but his mother is unsure which he had on the last time she saw him.
